Lee lands Villafuerte: University High junior soccer standout Marissa Villafuerte has committed to accept a scholarship offer from Lee University, an NAIA school in Cleveland, Tenn. The forward, who expects to play center mid in college, earned all-state honors last spring after notching seven goals and six assists. The two-time Pantagraph All-Intercity first-team selection had 11 goals and 14 assists as a freshman.
“Marissa has some of the best field vision that I have ever seen in a high school athlete,” said U High coach Hayley Sefton. “She can see the whole field on the fly, making adjustments or capitalizing on mistakes made by the other team very quickly. She has very good technical skills and her ability to transition from offense to defense and vice versa is very good.”
Villafuerte, who plans to major in athletic training, joins a program that won NAIA national titles in 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011. Lee will move to NCAA Division II in 2015, Villafuerte’s freshman season. She will sign a national letter of intent in February 2015.
